Laura Jauregui Shooting – Authorities think that a woman who died and another who was seriously injured were victims of a random attack by a gunman who then fatally shot himself, according to statements made by police on Friday evening. The shooting occurred in the Arboretum in Northwest Austin. At this time, Austin police are still investigating the facts behind the gunshot that occurred in the Teapioca Lounge at the outdoor retail center soon after 5 p.m. on Thursday. The shooting was initially reported to 911 dispatchers as an active shooting, which triggered a massive emergency response. Two additional persons were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Laura Jauregui, who was 64 years old, was named as the victim who passed away, but the police did not name the woman who was hurt. The suspect, identified as Tang-Kang Dave Chiang, was found to be 38 years old. According to the police, an investigation is still ongoing to determine the reason for the shooting. Witness statements and surveillance footage have been extremely helpful to the authorities as they do their investigation. The authorities have also requested that anyone in the neighborhood who may have photographs or video provide them to them as soon as possible.
Officers who responded to the shooting at 5:09 p.m. found Chiang, Jauregui, and another lady lying on the floor of the store, according to a statement released by the police department. The police reported that they had received calls about the possibility of an explosion; however, authorities were unable to locate any explosive devices.
