Bill Richardson Obituary, Death Cause – Truly awful news. Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson died at his Cape Cod home. Details underneath. Statement by Richardson Center for Global Engagement Washington, DC—September 2, 2023 The Richardson Center for Global Engagement mourns the death of former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson in his sleep last night at his Chatham, MA summer home. Governor Richardson was 75.
Mickey Bergman, Richardson Center Vice President, said: “Governor Richardson passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. He spent his entire life serving others, including in government and freeing hostages and unfairly jailed foreigners. There was no one that Governor Richardson would not communicate with if it offered the prospect of releasing a person to freedom. The world lost an advocate for the unjustly held abroad, and I lost a mentor and friend.”
Richardson served as a US Congressman, US Ambassador to the United Nations and Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton, and Governor of New Mexico. He is well known for his post-government volunteer work to liberate hostages and wrongly incarcerated foreigners through his nonprofit foundation. Since its creation in 2011, the Center has helped over 80 families navigate the incarceration of their loved ones and use “fringe diplomacy” to negotiate with foreign parties to bring them home. Richardson was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize numerous times, including in 2023. Bergman continued, “Right now our focus is on supporting his family, including his 50-year-old wife Barbara, who was with him when he died. Information will be shared when it becomes available.”
