April Underhill Obituary, Death – In a heart-wrenching incident, Goldsboro experienced a tragic loss as one woman lost her life in a car crash on Saturday, around 1:45 a.m. The Goldsboro police, along with the fire department and Wayne County EMS, rushed to respond to a report of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 70 West near I-795.
The investigation revealed that Leland Underhill and his wife, April Underhill, were walking east in the eastbound lane of U.S. 70 West, next to the curb. They were pushing shopping carts, dressed in dark clothing, with Leland carrying a small flashlight.
Tragically, a vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. 70 West struck April Underhill with the right front portion of the vehicle. Although Leland Underhill was not hit and remained unharmed, April Underhill was found lying along the south side of the highway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene, cooperated with the investigation, and was later transported to Wayne UNC Health Care for minor injuries. The police determined that neither speed nor alcohol played a role in the accident, and it was found that April Underhill was in the roadway when she was struck.
In this heartbreaking incident, no charges will be filed against the driver of the vehicle. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Underhill family during this difficult time.
